Anthropogenic effects on the marine environment adjacent to Palmer Station, Antarctica

چکیده
Abstract Localized contamination from research-related activities and its effects on macrofauna communities in the marine environment were investigated at Palmer Station, a medium-sized Antarctic research station. Relatively low concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; 32–302 ng g -1 ) total petroleum (TPHs; 0.9–8.9 μg detected sediments adjacent to sewage outfall pier, where most human expected have occurred, even lower two seemingly reference areas (PAHs 6–30 , TPHs 0.03–5.1 ). Elevated PAHs one sample taken area (816 polychlorinated biphenyls (353 dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (3.2 25.3 samples indicate spatial heterogeneity localized sediment contamination. Limpet ( Nacella concinna tissues collected Station had high PAHs, copper, lead, zinc several other metals relative outlying islands. Sediment limpet tissue contaminant decreased since early 1990s following Bahía Paraíso spill. Natural characteristics affected macrofaunal community composition more than presumably because overall levels.

Anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems in Antarctica.
Antarctica is the most isolated continent on Earth, but it has not escaped the negative impacts of human activity. The unique marine ecosystems of Antarctica and their endemic faunas are affected on local and regional scales by overharvesting, pollution, and the introduction of alien species. Global climate change is also having deleterious impacts: rising sea temperatures and ocean acidificati...
متن کاملEffects of marine reserves on adjacent fisheries.
Marine reserves have been widely promoted as conservation and fishery management tools. There are robust demonstrations of conservation benefits, but fishery benefits remain controversial. We show that marine reserves in Florida (United States) and St. Lucia have enhanced adjacent fisheries. Within 5 years of creation, a network of five small reserves in St. Lucia increased adjacent catches of ...

Various, and at times contradictory, conclusions have been drawn regarding the mo es of vertical export of particu late material during and after blooms in the southern oceans. For example, Wefer and Fischer (1991) reported that sedi ment-trap samples were dominated by fecal pellets, indicat ing that zooplankton grazing dominated the packaging and removal of phytoplankton. In contrast, Von Bodu...
متن کاملSources of Anthropogenic Sound in the Marine Environment
Anthropogenic sound is created in the ocean both purposefully and unintentionally. The result is noise pollution that is high-intensity and acute, as well as lower-level and chronic. The locations of noise pollution are along well-traveled paths in the sea and particularly encompass coastal and continental shelf waters. Increased use of the sea for commercial shipping, geophysical exploration, ...
